The Presidential Candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has indicated that he will grant amnesty to individuals jailed for their engagements in small scale mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Mr. Mahama gave this clearest indication at the Adum Banso in the Mpohor Constituency of the Western Region during his fourth day of electioneering campaign in the region, stating that it was senseless to set foreigners free while punish our own people for engaging in the same activities.
He said, “It’s sad. The government said it was fighting galamsey and they arrested, prosecuted, and jailed Ghanaians who were engaged in that activity but left the Chinese woman.”
“Today, they are still in prison. That Chinese galamsey-queen was arrested but left to go free. She was never prosecuted but our people are in jail suffering. When we come, we shall grant all those arrested and jailed some amnesty. They will come back to their homes and work,” he continued.
Aisha Huang, the Chinese galamsey queen, was at the centre of national controversy when she arrested but left to go scot free. It is in this light that the former president informs his decision to replicate same actions for innocent miners.
